About Dean McCartney

Dean McCartney has worked as a photographer for some of Australia’s highest profile magazines and advertising clients for the past 15 years. His work demonstrates a flexible approach that allows him to tell a pictorial story, interpret a creative direction or deliver on a technical brief. His portraits include celebrity profiles for high-circulation magazines, along with more socially focused government publications. Whether it's an artistic interpretation for a gallery wall, a gritty image for a political journal or a straight corporate shot of an executive, Dean McCartney looks forward to every opportunity to shoot people. His folio covers a range of places and spaces, including old and new buildings, interiors, inner city ally ways, art galleries and lunar landscapes.

In the 2011 National Photographic Portrait Prize the judges 'Highly Commended' his work, NPG curator Sarah Engledow commended James by Dean McCartney, an incredible photograph of a baby immediately after birth. "The most powerful and dramatic evocation of coming into life that I've ever seen," Ms Engledow said. She said the image is proof that even a baby can be a viable portrait subject. In his first breath the viewer can see power and character in James's face as he comes roaring into life.
